Martin Adams left a referee struggling to hold back his laughter when he failed to hit the board with a poor throw at the Modus Super Series. Adams ended up beating Chris Gilliland in a 4-2 triumph to go third in Group A but had an embarrassing moment in the final leg.

The man from Sutton hit a treble 20 with his first dart before narrowly missing the treble on his second attempt, leaving him on a score of 80. He did not even hit the board with his third dart, which appeared to slip out the back of his hand as he threw his arm forward.

The dart fell comically to the ground, prompting a shrug from Adams as he went to collect the two darts that made it to the board. It clearly amused the referee, who was seen trying to stifle his laughter but struggled to contain it as he flashed a large grin.

Adams went on to recover from the embarrassment by wrapping up the leg with a double eight to secure a 4-2 victory over Gilliland. The 68-year-old, who knocked out Phil Taylor at the Champion of Champions event in March, will be desperate to put the humiliating moment behind him as he looks to close in at the top of Group A.

He will be in action again on Wednesday to try and claim first place and ensure that he progresses to finals night on Saturday. However, it will be a tough task for Adams to leapfrog current leader Tom Sykes, who sits top of the group by four points ahead of Gilliland in second place.

Adams reached the semi-finals of the Modus Super Series last week but was denied a spot in the final by Jimmy van Schie, who went on to secure his place at Champions Week by beating Sykes.

Quizzed on if he was hoping to go one better this week, Adams said: "It's been a bit quiet back home and it gives you something to focus on, something to look forward to and get on with. I can't complain [with how last week went], it went okay. Whether it will go the same this time or not, I don't know.

"One or two things have happened back home, but we'll see how we go. Finding the consistency is a bit harder these days than it used to be, but you know, we keep trying and battling at it. You don't want to play easy games all the time, you want something to get your teeth into."
