Luke Littler comment after beating Michael van Gerwen speaks volumes about teen
Luke Littler is the Bahrain Masters champion after beating Michael van Gerwen on Friday.
Luke Littler showed his incredibly humble and mature nature after suggesting that the opportunity to play in the Premier League may not happen again. The teenage sensation continued his remarkable rise to stardom by beating darts legend Michael van Gerwen to win the Bahrain Masters.
Littler admitted prior to travelling to Bahrain that he had not thrown a dart since his World Championship final defeat against Luke Humphries. But he was in fine form in his first outing since his Alexandra Palace run.
The star defeated Van Gerwen to win the Bahrain Masters on Friday, two nights before his 17th birthday. His evening started with a nine-darter and he recorded a tremendous 8-5 victory against the three-time world champion in the final.
Typically humble, Littler insisted that he was not ‘expecting anything’ before heading out to Bahrain. The unassuming fans’ favourite insisted that he wants to take part in the Premier League as the opportunity may never arise again - despite many expecting that Littler will dominate darts for several decades.
“I wasn't expecting anything. I just came over to Bahrain, thinking I wanted to win my first round game and see who I would play in the next round,” Littler said after his victory over Van Gerwen.
“But I have won all my games and got over the line against Michael, who is still one of the very best, and now I cannot wait to play in everything.
“My manager asked me after the World Championship final, 'Do you want to play in the Premier League? It's gruelling every week, and obviously you have got the Pro Tours (floor tournaments) in between.'

“I said, 'Let's do it – why not? It may never happen again.' That's how I look at it – take these opportunities, they may never come round again. Now I've won on my World Series debut, I can't wait for next week in Holland, but I haven't set any goals and I don't want to.
“My only set goal was to win a game at the Worlds, which would have been a big thing on its own, and I got to the final. I have to take every competition as it comes, game by game, and see who comes out the winner.”
Littler scooped £20,000 for winning in Bahrain, adding to the £200,000 he earned during the World Championship. He is next in action at the TOTO Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch, with the tournament taking place on 26 and 27 January.
