Hill’s support fuels students’ designs
AS a job application, giving a world champion a world first is not bad going.
Damon Hill, F1 king in 1996, was given a glimpse into the future when he sat in the world’s first single-seater fuel cell racing car at the launch of this year’s Formula Student initiative.
He was not the only one impressed by the students from Imperial College London, who designed the car.
Brawn GP chief Ross Brawn, himself a graduate of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers which runs the initiative, said: “I have seen real passion and determination in the teams I came across today and with motorsport being such a competitive environment, FS gives them a real edge.
“In my team I have former FS graduat es including Jenson Button’s race engineer, Andrew Shovlin.
“The educational and academic aspects Formula Student offers, along with the students’ determination and will to succeed, makes it unique.
“The enthusiasm I saw today fills me with optimism for the future of science and engineering in our country.”
