The CrossFit Games are currently taking place, with athletes competing in a range of aerobic, weightlifting and gymnastics events. The individual winners are dubbed “the fittest on earth” and take home prizes of up to $300,0000 (£247,720). The first annual CrossFit Games was held in 2007, and the competition has grown substantially since then.
Where are the CrossFit Games being held?
The 2019 CrossFit Games are being held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin, United States.
The four-day contest began on Thursday, August 1, and will end on Sunday, August 4.
Thursday’s contest consisted of
Event 1: First Cut
Four rounds for time of:
- 400-metre run
- Three legless rope climbs
- Seven squat snatches
The snatch weight for the event was 185 pounds (84 kilograms) for men and 130 pounds (59 kilograms) for women. The event was won by both defending champions, Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey.
Event 2: Second Cut
As fast as possible, each competitor had to accumulate 800 meters on a rowing machine, then lift two kettlebells from the shoulder to overhead for 66 repetitions.
It then finished with 132 feet (40 meters) of handstand walking.
The weight of each kettlebell is 16 kilograms (35 pounds) for the men and 12 kilograms (26 pounds) for the women.
The second cut was won by Mat Fraser and for the women Karissa Pearce.

Can anyone beat Mat Fraser?
Matthew Fraser has been the Individual Men’s champion three years in a row, with 2016, 2017 and 2018 titles.
Coming first in both cuts so far, Fraser looks to be the one to watch this year as well.
The Individual Women’s champion two years in a row has been Tia-Clair Toomey, in 2017 and 2018.
However, coming 12th in the second cut, Australian Toomey has some catching up to do to regain her top spot.
She currently sits in third place, with Pearce in first and Iceland’s Annie Thorisdottir in second.
In the team’s contest, the groups had to complete seven synchronized rope climbs, 42 worm thrusters, five syncronised rope climbs, 30 worm thrusters, three synchronized rope climbs and 18 worm thrusters.
They had an 18-minute cut-off for these.
Current leaders are Mayhem Freedom who managed to bag 293 of 300 available points on day one.
They are followed in the standings by Central Beasts and CrossFit Krypton.
