Philip Rivers: NFL MVP claim made over Chargers star ahead of Ravens clash
PHILIP RIVERS should be in contention for this season’s MVP.
NFL London: Everything you need to know about the Chargers
That’s the view of Super Bowl champion turned NFL analyst Michael Robinson.
Rivers has led the Los Angeles Chargers to an 11-3 record this season and they face the Baltimore Ravens tonight.
It means a playoff berth is already secured for the Chargers, but they still look to topple the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
The Chargers are in their second season in LA but they failed to make the postseason in their first campaign in the city.
The franchise have never won a Super Bowl, losing their only appearance to the San Francisco 49ers in 1994.
But Robinson believes they can break their duck this year with Rivers, who has made 31 touchdown passes this year, key to the cause.
“This is the year for Los Angeles Chargers,” Robinson told Good Morning Football.
“Philip Rivers is playing out of his mind.
“He should be talked about in the MVP category a lot more. I think Patrick Mahomes is going to get it but he [Rivers] was clutch last week against the Chiefs.
“He did that without Keenan Allen and Melvin Gordon.
“You don’t look at him as a mobile quarterback but he’s the least sacked quarterback in the National Football League.
“When teams try to blitz him, he makes you pay.
“When you don’t blitz him, he still makes you pay.
“So I had to show some love for Philip Rivers because I don’t think he’s getting the attention he should.
“And yes, he is a Hall of Famer.”
