Grand National winner Ryan Mania still hoping to leave hospital today after Hexham fall
RYAN MANIA is still hoping to leave hospital today after being injured in a fall at Hexham on Sunday, less than 24 hours after winning the Grand National.
Mania, 23, won the National on Auroras Encore on Saturday but was taken by air ambulance to the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary just 24 hours later.
The Scotsman was linking up once again with Bingley-based trainer Sue Smith in the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle but his mount Stagecoach Jasper came down early on the final circuit.
Some 25 minutes after the race Mania was still being attended to on the track by medics and he was put into the air ambulance on a spinal board.
Mania, who remained conscious throughout, tweeted: "Thanks so much for all the messages. I'm grand. Staying in hospital to get another scan tomorrow then should be home. #highsandlows."
Agent Bruce Jeffrey, tweeted: "News regarding national hunt jockey Ryan Mania, he will (be) detained overnight for precautionary MRI scan tomorrow morning. Will update tomorrow.
"Ryan and his family appreciate all the kind wishes and would like to thank you all very much."
Mania received what appeared to be a kick between his shoulder blades and was described as very sore before going for further assessment on neck and back injuries. He was reported to be in a stable condition.
Clerk of the course James Armstrong confirmed Mania had been conscious and talking after the fall.
