The Spaniard – who won his first major last year at the 74th time of asking by beating Justin Rose in a playoff – had been desperate to defend his Green Jacket at this year’s tournament.
However, he got off to a torrid start and his title defence looks to be all but over.
Garcia took an amazing 13 shots to play the 15th hole in the opening round of the Masters.

And staggeringly, he dumped five balls into the water on the par five, where he made an eagle in last year's final round, to record the highest score on the hole in tournament history.
The previous shot record was 11.
Garcia is currently in 86th place in the 87-man field and now 10 over par.
Fans were shocked by Garcia’s woeful performance on the opening day.
“What is happening to Sergio Garcia right now is tough to watch. Going to make double digits on 15,” one fan tweeted.
While some couldn’t resist making a joke at the Spaniard’s expense.
“Sergio Garcia has just knocked 5 straight balls into the the water at 15. I have never felt closer to a Masters champion,” one fan said.
Another tweeted: “I'm better than Sergio Garcia at golf.”
