Despite being on a run of six birdies, the American's form was abruptly halted in bizare fashion.
At 10-under, he was making a charge towards the top of the leaderboard but his drive at the 17th struck the hotel, took a bounce and landed on the balcony.
And Mickleson went on to make a triple bogey to end any chance of Open glory.
“I’ve tried hitting some shots from weird places over the years but that just about beats the lot. I don’t know if I would have climbed up to do that,” he said.
“I love it here and I certainly don’t feel unlucky on it. Hit good shots and you get rewarded and you hit shots like I did at 17 and you get penalised. It’s a good course.
“It was a good late move. With the weather coming in, if I could have posted an 11 or12-under, you just never know.”
