Class act Guan to hit the books again
TIANLANG Guan will be back to school in Guangzhou next week after winning the lowest amateur award at the Masters.
The 14-year-old will give up the jet-set life of a pro golfer after one final appointment in Georgia on Tuesday – an NBA basketball game in Atlanta.
“In China you don’t take class, they give you the class, so I have a lot to catch up on – Chinese, maths, English, science,” said Guan.
“The whole week has been great for me – I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s not easy to play here, to make the cut and be low amateur. I think I did a pretty good job this week but I’ve not decided when to turn pro yet. There’s still a lot of things to improve.”
Despite his one-shot penalty for slow play on Friday, Guan did not double bogey – or three-putt – a single hole all week.
He posted a final-round 75 to finish at 12 over alongside Sandy Lyle, who said: “It was interesting to see what he had to offer. If he can stay away from too many teachers, he’ll be OK.”
