Golf LIVE: Rory McIlroy calls out fan at PGA Championship as player punished
The PGA Championship is set to begin today, with new comments seeing an Erica Stoll incident back in the headlines

The second golf major of the year - the PGA Championship - officially starts today with the biggest names in action. Despite that, the headlining story has come from Wednesday's press conference by PGA of America CEO Terry Clark, with an incident involving Erica Stoll, the wife of Rory McIlroy, brought back into the spotlight.
President Don Rea was heavily criticised for not immediately apologising to McIlroy after a cup was thrown at Stoll during last year's Ryder Cup. Rea has scarcely been heard of since then, with Clark offering minimal clarity on his current role during the press conference that the 59-year-old would normally lead.
Regarding matters on the course, World No 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is one of those tipped for victory, with it announced he will get his event underway at 7:05pm (BST).
Back-to-back Masters winner Rory McIlroy will tee off on hole one over five hours earlier, with the Northern Irishman hoping a late change of footwear, due to a blister on his toe, will help him overcome that issue. His new shoes have been described as 'softer' via Skratch's Riley Hamel.

New leader
An eagle at the 11th and a tidy birdie from 10 feet at 13 send Dan Brown to the top.
The Englishman now joins a three‑way share of the lead.

McIlroy so close to birdie
It doesn't get closer than that.
He faces a demanding birdie putt on the par‑four 18th, and it's tracking perfectly… Right up until it dies a fraction short. McIlroy was left stunned.

Rory McIlroy calls out fan at PGA
It was not the start the Northern Irish golfer wanted in his bid for back‑to‑back majors, finding the rough off the tee and opening his week with a bogey.
After hitting his shot, McIlroy appeared to complain at fans.
Garrick Higgo penalised
The South African was hit with a two‑stroke penalty after arriving late for his Day 1 tee time. He had been on the practice putting green but failed to reach the designated starting area for his 12.18pm (UK time) slot.
Higgo, who tied for 55th at last year's PGA Championship, found himself on the back foot before hitting a single shot.

Lowry makes honest admission
Shane Lowry delivered an honest verdict ahead of the PGA Championship.
"I've had a few pretty big punches in the gut, or a little bit lower than that!" Lowry laughed when speaking to RTÉ Sport's Greg Allen.
"And they've come at a weird time for me this year. Obviously what happened in Dubai at the start of the year, that was pretty early in the season and I came back from that.
"The Cognizant I was playing really good golf and then that happened. To come back and really contend at the Masters and put myself in a position to go out there on Sunday and do well, and then have a shocking day there, yeah it was hard.
"Probably one of the hardest things I've had to do ever was, like literally after I finished, Rory's walking up and I had to go out and put on a brave face.
"I was happy for him, don't get me wrong, one of my close friends winning the Masters, I was very happy for him. But it was a hard place for me to sit there in front of everyone and put on a brave face.
"Mentally it's been a challenge week after week to keep going. I played 10 out of 12 weeks. My schedule has been quite tough. It was nice to have a week off last week and kind of reset myself."

PGA Championship underway
The first few groups have completed hole one at the PGA Championship with more updates arriving on how others are getting on.
Ben Griffin, Alrich Potgieter, David Puig and Denny McCarthy, Braden Shattuck and Alex Fitzpatrick, have their scores in already.
The latter duo are the only ones to not hit a par with Fitzpatrick managing a birdie but Shattuck forced to settle for a bogey.
The featured groups are due to get going later this afternoon!
Kaufman reveals prediction
Sky Sports analyst Smylie Kaufman is backing Jon Rahm to win the PGA Championship.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "I think his experience in winning could be the difference in him winning the PGA Championship."

Golf star who ignored Rory McIlroy's advice has 'no regrets'
Tom McKibbin has explained he harbours no regrets with regards to ignoring Rory McIlroy's advice on joining LIV Golf, despite mounting uncertainty surrounding its future.
He told the BBC: "No, not at all. I don't regret it one bit. The last year and a half has been great. Getting to spend time with Jon [Rahm] and Tyrrell [Hatton], playing with some of the best guys in the world. I feel like I've improved a lot in different aspects of my game, and I am more comfortable. I've really enjoyed it."

'Dynamic' McIlroy tough to beat
Speaking about McIlroy's chances of winning the PGA Championship, Wayne Riley told Sky Sports: "McIlroy's a dynamic player and, having spoken to him, he loves the golf course. It is wide and I know how much he's looking forward to it.
"I think he will be very hard to beat and I would be surprised if he's not seriously in the hunt on Sunday afternoon."

McIlroy's late PGA Championship change
Rory McIlroy has opted for a change of footwear on the eve of the PGA Championship having been bothered by a blister on his toe.
The Northern Irishman suffered the problem during last weekend's Truist Championship. It was reported that he ripped the nail of his toe on Monday.
The following day, McIlroy sparked some injury fears by only playing three practice holes on Tuesday. However, he returned to the course on Wednesday and was all smiles.
He was also overheard by Skratch journalist Riley Hamel, at the driving range describing his new shoes as feeling "softer".

PGA Championship star jokingly booed
Michael Block was jokingly booed by PGA Championship spectators after missing the target he was aiming for.
The 49-year-old revealed to fans that his target was an "electrical pole" in the distance but he instead drove his ball straight into a fairway bunker.
Upon realising where it ended up, a mixture of laughs and boos were aimed at Block.

Stoll incident back in the spotlight
The annual PGA Of America press conference took place on Wednesday with CEO Terry Clark filling in for President Don Rea.
The latter continues to face significant backlash for his response to abuse that some players received during the Ryder Cup. Erica Stoll and Rory McIlroy were at the centre of one incident where the former was hit by a cup thrown from the crowd.
Rea's delayed apology for that specifically saw him heavily criticised and he has scarcely been heard from since. Clark spoke about Rea during the press conference while also loosely explaining why he was holding it.
"First off, I've been asked by the board to help represent the business of the association, and how we think about our membership is something that we continue to have Don focused on from that side," Clark said.
"This, I think I'm first of all gratified that I've been asked to take this today and handle with [Chief Championships Officer Kerry Haigh] where we are.
"I guess I would tell you more, because you said it, around — I was on the board. I was on the board for the last couple years, intimately connected to the governance of this association and what the real value is by getting that voice of members. And I've loved to lean into this role, and more appropriately how do you leverage that to help me do my job.
"But at the same time, we've really worked on, over the course of the last year, truly the right roles and responsibilities so we can be effective as an association, and I think this just reflects it with me helping to translate what's our business and how we're getting at this championship this week."
When pushed on Rea, he replied: "Specifically, what we've asked is for Don to keep his focus on the member side, and we've tried to keep the right responsibilities across our distinct leaders in here. So that's it,"
