The Open's breakout star Daniel Brown celebrated his joint-10th finish with a hearty meal at Wetherspoons after scooping £245,000 in prize money. The 29-year-old was making his Open debut at Royal Troon and was the surprise package of the tournament as he finished on level par.

Brown emerged as one of the most unlikely contenders in Open history when he made a flying start to lead the field at the end of day one. He finished his opening round on six-under-par and had a chance of winning until he carded a final round of three-over.

The 29-year-old still managed to come home in joint-10th, picking up a £245,000 prize as a welcome reward for his efforts. He celebrated his achievement with a slap-up meal at Wetherspoons, inviting several of his friends to join him.

Brown was seen enjoying a glass of white wine in addition to a pizza, some fried chicken and a bowl of cheesy chips. He was still wearing his golf gear as he sipped on his drink and held it aloft to pose for pictures on social media.

After finishing his final round at The Open, Brown admitted he had mixed emotions after scoring five bogeys on the front nine and ending up on level par, nine strokes adrift of winner Xander Schauffele.

"If you would have told me this at the start of the week, obviously I would have been very pleased, but I wanted to do better and be higher up the board," he said.

"At the minute there’s probably a little bit more disappointment but when I reflect on it, I’ll be obviously very pleased, I would have thought. But it was just the front nine. I didn’t quite get it going all week, really."

During the tournament, Brown was spotted puffing on cigarettes on his way around Royal Troon despite trying to hide his habit from the TV cameras. He was also caught on video appearing to throw a cigarette butt into the rough during his opening round on Thursday.

Asked if he was smoking in an attempt to ease his nerves, Brown said: "No, that's just a bit of a bad habit that I've got into. I only really do it when I'm golfing, to be honest. I suppose it could be a bit of a coping mechanism.

"I was trying to sneak. I mean, my mum and dad are here. There's a lot of people watching and I don't know how people are going to take it. Obviously, I'm sure a lot of people know."
