Bob MacIntyre's Scottish Open dream victory almost ruined by spectator
Bob MacIntyre secured a famous victory at The Renaissance Club over the weekend.
Robert MacIntyre’s dream win at the Scottish Open on Sunday was almost ruined by a dozy spectator.
It was a historic weekend’s work for the Scot, who became the first homegrown winner since Colin Montgomerie in 1999.
Denied by a sensational Rory McIlroy performance 12 months ago, this time it was MacIntyre who dazzled spectators with his stroke play.
Trailing Adam Scott by two shots heading into the final three holes, the left-hander eagled the 16th, before hitting a birdie on the 18th to secure his maiden Scottish Open title.
But things could’ve been so much different for MacIntyre, had an earlier gaffe forced him to mess up a shot.
MacIntyre was gearing up to take his shot when the 27-year-old backed out because he’d mistaken someone carrying a flag behind the green as the one he was aiming at.
The moment was captured by The Scottish Open’s official Instagram account, with MacIntyre saying: “A guy was carrying a flag behind the green, I thought the flag was moving.”
His caddie then chipped in with: “Yeah, that’s not our flag,” before offering a relieved chuckle in MacIntyre’s direction.
It’s just as well MacIntyre spotted the moving flag, because had he tried to pin the wrong target, it could’ve cost him a shot at the Scottish Open title.
In the end, it was nothing more than a blip during an otherwise stellar showing for the Oban-born star.
Speaking after his win, MacIntyre told Sky Sports: “I think I lost my voice after the scream on that hole. I thought I was short. I’ve put a lot of work into this. I’ve changed a lot within the team and I’ve just worked hard.
“I wanted The Scottish Open. I got a bit of luck on 16 that you need to win golf tournaments.

The Open is next up for MacIntyre, but he insisted before heading up to Royal Troon, he’s going to allow himself time to celebrate his Scottish Open triumph.
He added: “Next week is a new week but I tell you, I’m going to celebrate this with my family, friends, and everyone here. I’m going to celebrate this one hard. We’ll pitch up to the Open when we pitch up to the Open.”
