Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, is set to 'make a run' at Pinehurst No. 2 in the US Open after being given the green light to participate.

The 2024 US Open presents an interesting scenario for Woods. The former world No.1 required a special exemption from the USGA to compete, having failed to automatically qualify for a major for the first time in his professional career.

A US Open official, who confessed to being 'more of a Phil Mickelson' fan, observed Woods on the range and noted that he seemed fully focused and committed to the challenge ahead. He stated that the 48 year old was 'moving well' and suggested he 'would not be surprised' if Woods made the cut and launched an unexpected bid for US. Open victory.

Despite being in unfamiliar territory, Woods is known for his godlike ability to triumph against all odds. His career has been marked by numerous comebacks, with his stunning Masters win in 2019 - his 15th and most recent major title - being one of the most memorable.

Woods is confident that he still possesses the skill and 'strength' to compete at Pinehurst this week. For many, simply seeing the American complete the weekend and finish 72 holes would be seen as a significant step forward.

As always, Woods attracts top-tier interest, and he took to the practice range to refine his game before his campaign begins on Thursday.

A victory for golf legend Woods would be a monumental achievement. The star, who has been absent from the US Open for the past three years due to injury, has had his ambitious hopes of competing in major tournaments impacted by his limited schedule in recent seasons.

Last month, Woods failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship, which was won by Xander Schauffele. He attributed his mistakes leading to him missing the cut at Valhalla to a lack of tournament preparation, following his commendable effort at Augusta where he made the cut against all odds.

Woods has battled with fitness issues for over a decade now, and since November 2020, he has only managed to complete all 72 holes of a tournament three times. However, he has consistently shown that he cannot be underestimated on the golf course.

Three-time US Open champion Woods will tee off alongside Will Zalatoris and English 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick on Thursday morning.
