Tiger Woods: Why PGA Championship glory will NOT follow stunning Masters win - Nick Faldo
TIGER WOODS is looking to win his 16th major title of his career but golfing legend Nick Faldo doesn’t think it will happen for him at the Bethpage Black course.
The second major of the year will take place at the notoriously difficult Bethpage Black course on Long Island in the state of New York.
After days of heavy rain and low temperatures the weather is expected to improve when the tournament gets underway today.
However, Faldo reckons Tiger Woods will struggle on the course as it penalises golfers who stray off the fairways.
And he believes the poor weather conditions over the past few days will only make the course even harder for Woods.
Bethpage will beat Tiger this week
“He is not going to win. No, no, no,” Faldo said about the American icon who has won 81 PGA Tours.
“Bethpage will beat Tiger this week.
“The beast will beat the Tiger. You have to be on straight and narrow.
“You've just got to hit the fairways. It's a brute.
“Will he win more Majors? He really needs to be fit in April for the next five years.
“I can't see how he can survive the roughness here.”
Woods ended his 11-year major drought by winning a fifth Masters title at the Augusta National last month and as a result is now the sentimental favourite to win in New York.
The 43-year-old is currently sixth overall in the PGA Tour world rankings and Woods admitted he is relishing the opportunity of winning a record-equalling fifth US PGA title.
"To tie Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus with five wins would be a special accomplishment," he said.
PGA Championship: Tiger Woods hugs Rory McIlroy
Woods won his first US PGA title 20 years ago but victory this week would see the American propelled back to the top of the rankings - a feat he last achieved back in March 2013.
The Bethpage Black course is the host of the 101st US PGA.
It is a public course that has a sign next to the first tee that famously reads: "The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend for highly skilled golfers."
It is a par 70 with just two par fives and measures 7,459 yards.
