A day to remember for rookie Tom
EUROPE’S march to Ryder Cup glory was spearheaded by rookie future star Tommy Fleetwood.
Largely unknown outside golfing circles, the 27-year-old from Southport, Merseyside, broke a long-standing record in the competition.
played his way into the record books with golfing partner Francesco Molinari by winning his first four matches in the contest – the first Ryder Cup “newbie” to achieve the feat – and was carried shoulder high by his team-mates.
Fleetwood’s hopes of becoming the first European to win all five matches at a single Ryder Cup were crushed by opponent Tony Finau.
Wherever he plays, Fleetwood is accompanied by his wife Clare Craig, 50, who is also his golfing manager.
It works very well. I do as I’m told when needed to
Before taking full-time control of Tommy’s career, Clare was vice president of golfing management company Hambric Europe.
The couple have a son, Franklin, and Clare has two children by a previous marriage.
Fleetwood said of their professional relationship: “It works very well. I do as I’m told when needed to.
“I think we were always open to the idea that if it didn’t work then we’d try something else, but luckily for us, we get on so well.”
