Tiger Woods 'won't win another major' despite Tour Championship victory - pundit
TIGER WOODS will not win another major despite his momentous Tour Championship victory in Atlanta yesterday.
That is the opinion of ESPN pundit Stephen A Smith, who has covered Woods’ career.
The 14-time major winner excited the crowds on Sunday at East Lake by shooting 11 under for the tournament and claiming his first tour win in five years.
Two spinal fusion surgeries last year threatened to wreak further havoc with the former force of golf, who has struggled with form ever since his infidelity scandal in 2009.
Woods’ last major victory was the 2008 US Open, but Sunday’s heroics have the golf world believing the 42-year-old may win another major.
Tiger has certainly come close - this year he finished second in the PGA Championship and staked a serious claim for The Open.
Smith is unconvinced that Woods is getting back to his best, or even possesses the form to win a major, however.
“You want to label a top-10 major finish as Tiger being back? Cool. That’s not my definition of Tiger being back,” the pundit said on ESPN’s First Take.
“My definition of Tiger being back is when he wins a major.
How he’s played yesterday… If that had been a major, he’d have lost
“Even when I was saying I don’t know if he’ll win a major again, I could see that he might win a PGA Tour event again.
“I sincerely hope that I’m wrong - one of the first things I did yesterday was congratulate him.
“He is great not just for the sport of golf but for the sports world.”
A huge crowd watched Woods’ last round as he held onto the lead despite posting one over for the last day.
“It was unbelievable watching that crowd follow him,” Smith continued.
“That’s something special to behold - nobody could do that but Tiger.
“But you know what, he shot a one over yesterday - he was five shots up and almost lost that.
“I look at Tiger and just think - the bigger the event, the more pressure that mounts, the more elite the competition, let’s see what he does.
“I don’t think [he’s gonna win another major]. On any given day Tiger can be the best in the world. But to win a tournament, it’s got to be four days.
“How he’s played yesterday… If that had been a major, he’d have lost.”
