Man Utd transfer news: Harry Maguire claim made about Jose Mourinho by Paul Mariner
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho must make a move for Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire because they are desperate for defensive reinforcements.
David Seaman: Man United would suit Harry Maguire
That’s the verdict of former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner, who says United are in need of a new centre-back.
Manchester United have splashed the cash on Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in an attempt to bolster their squad this summer.
And Mourinho is eager to make further forays into the transfer market to strengthen his defence for the oncoming season.
Maguire has emerged as a target for United having starred for Leicester and enjoyed a terrific World Cup with England.
Mariner, who picked up 35 Three Lions caps, claims Mourinho should raid the King Power Stadium for the 25-year-old.
"I think they need a central defender so badly," Mariner told ESPN FC.
"I think he was absolutely fantastic for England in the World Cup.
"[You] can play out of the back with him, he’s a threat from set-pieces.
"If I’m Mourinho, I’m getting after him."
Leicester boss Claude Puel has discussed his desire to keep hold of Maguire amid the Foxes’ pre-season plans.
"It is important [for Maguire] to continue for Leicester," said Puel. "It is a good feeling.
"If our players are interesting a lot of clubs, it is because we made good recruitment and work in our training sessions.
"It is important to continue this work. Of course, when we welcome them [Maguire and Jamie Vardy] back I hope we can to give them the opportunity to continue their ambition and perform in the Premier League."
United are also thought to have Toby Alderweireld, Leonardo Bonucci and Marquinhos in their sights as they hunt for defensive reinforcements.
