The shot-stopper recently joined from Bayer Leverkusen as Unai Emery continues to overhaul his Gunners squad.
Leno's goalkeeping rival Petr Cech has already taken the No 1 shirt at the Emirates this summer, leaving the German to pick the No 19 shirt.
And on the Arsenal website, the club explained the three reasons behind why their new arrival had chosen the number.
Leno's move cost the Gunners £19m last month, and the player officially confirmed his move on June 19.
“Leno also made his first-team debut aged 19 while on loan at Bayer Leverkusen from Vfb Stuttgart,” Arsenal's website added.
Let’s hope the number 19 brings more happy memories for Bernd this season
“Let’s hope the number 19 brings more happy memories for Bernd this season.”
Speaking last month, Leno revealed the driving forces behind his move to north London.
“I already know Musti and Mesut Ozil from the national team, plus Xhaka, Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan from the Bundesliga,” he told Arsenal Player.
“I talked to Musti about Arsenal many months ago.
“He said it’s a fantastic club with a fantastic stadium and fantastic fans.
“I watched games on the TV in Germany and yes, Arsenal is a fantastic club.
“I’ve known Musti for about 10 or 11 years. We grew up together in the youth national teams, the under-17s through to the under-21s.
“It’s funny to see us together at Arsenal now!”
