Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho texts David de Gea amid World Cup pressure
JOSE MOURINHO has contacted Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to help him with his World Cup woes, reports claim.
De Gea has been far from convinving in between the sticks for Spain.
He made an uncharacteristic error in Spain’s group game against Portugal where he allowed a Cristiano Ronaldo shot to squirm under him in a 3-3 draw.
Since then, he has seen his confidence levels dropped.
According to the Metro, Spain boss Fernando Hierro looks set to axe De Gea from the starting line-up.
Instead, he is thinking of promoting Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga following De Gea’s gaffes.
He’s my boy. It hurts me to say but he knows, he knows, it’s a bad mistake
The Metro report Mourinho has texted De Gea as a way to give him support during one of the most testing periods of his international career.
A poll ran by Spanish paper AS showed that 50 per cent of its 40,000 readers wanted De Gea dropped for the Iran game.
Mourinho tried to encourage De Gea last week when he said: “He’s my boy. It hurts me to say but he knows, he knows, it’s a bad mistake.
De Gea's World Cup fumble is 'unfortunate' says Fabregas
“But that happens to the best, the good thing with the best is he will be there next match, not afraid.”
Spain face Russia in the last 16 on Sunday (3pm UK time).
