Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery backed to complete 'incredible' Lichtsteiner signing
STEPHAN LICHTSTEINER could be a successful signing by Arsenal after an “incredible” spell at Juventus, claims ESPN FC pundit and former Gunners striker Paul Mariner.
Lichtsteiner is to leave Juventus this summer following the expiry of his contract.
Arsenal have been in talks with the 34-year-old right-back over a short-term deal at the Emirates.
The Switzerland international won Serie A in each of his seven seasons with Juventus and leaves the Old Lady with 14 major trophies.
Mariner believes Lichtsteiner would only be a back-up option to Hector Bellerin.
One of the best wing-backs that we have seen for a long, long time
But he reckons it could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business by Arsenal.
“Well, yeah, incredible,” Mariner said of Lichtsteiner.
“Look, 2012, 2014, absolutely, sign him tomorrow.
“One of the best wing-backs that we have seen for a long, long time. Up and down for fun, putting balls in the box, defending well.
Lichtsteiner given standing ovation at last game for Juventus
“On a free transfer, what is he, 34, 35 now? He’s had heart surgery, I’m assuming he’s still okay.
“If he comes in it will be as backup to Bellerin, be in the squad.
“Unai Emery, one of his first signings, am I excited? No.
“Will it possibly work as a free? Why not?”
