Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered knee ligament damage in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma and has since undergone an operation.
Liverpool are yet to put a time-frame on his return date but the Liverpool Echo suggest the midfielder will be out for six months.
That’s despite already starting a rehabilitation programme at Melwood.
There was hope that the 24-year-old, who had already been ruled out of the World Cup, would be fit for the start of the new Premier League season.

But injury struck in Liverpool's Champions League semi-final
Players recover from knee ligament injuries at different rates but six months for Oxlade-Chamberlain is claimed to be a best case scenario.
The England international had been having a stellar debut season for Liverpool having joined the Reds from Arsenal for £35million last summer.
And Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted the club will not rush Oxlade-Chamberlain back from injury.
“I cannot believe that this wonderful player and person in such a positive situation helping the team, making such a clear challenge, had this happen to him,” Klopp said.
“I've told him already that we will wait for him like a good wife when a man is in prison.”
Liverpool will be bolstered by the arrival of Naby Keita this summer but may choose to strengthen even more with Oxlade-Chamberlain sidelined.
Fellow midfielder Emre Can is expected to leave Anfield leaving Klopp short on midfield options.
