Liverpool news: Loris Karius should be replaced even if Reds beat Real Madrid – Thompson
LIVERPOOL goalkeeper Loris Karius should not be the club’s No 1 goalkeeper – even if he leads them to Champions League triumph.
Loris Karius should not be the Liverpool No 1 next season, says Phil Thompson
That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit and legendary Liverpool defender Phil Thompson.
Karius has been a regular in between the sticks for the Reds since the turn of the year.
He has played all but one of the Premier League games in 2018 and started all six of the Champions League knockout stage matches so far.
Thompson says it is not the time to talk about whether Karius should be the regular goalkeeper with the final against Real Madrid coming up in three weeks.
I think most Liverpool fans will look at it and probably think we do need a new goalkeeper
But when pressed by Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, Thompson admits he would like a better No 1 next season.
“Let the lad enjoy his celebration time of getting to a Champions League final,” Thompson said.
“Yes he will probably (still be the No 1 after the final). Do I think that he should be changed? Probably.

“But one thing you can’t deny him is that he’s been far better since the turn of the year, since (Virgil) Van Dijk’s been in.
“I know he’s made his errors, but there’s not been as many.
“But you’re asking me the question and I think most Liverpool fans will look at it and probably think we do need a new goalkeeper.”
