Leeds news: Chris Powell explains why Thomas Christiansen needs new signings
LEEDS UNITED could miss out on the play-offs if they fail to strengthen in January.
Chris Powell believes Leeds could do with a couple of new signings to sustain their play-off push
That is according to Chris Powell, who believes head coach Thomas Christiansen is still adjusting to the demands of the Championship.
Leeds began the season in fine form and briefly topped the division in September but a run of six defeats in seven games saw them slip to mid-table.
They have picked up six points from nine since the international break to climb to eighth.
But Powell believes Leeds need a couple of additions when the transfer window reopens if they are to sustain their push for the top six.
“As I’ve always said, this league can quickly turn your form around,” Powell said.
I’m sure with maybe one or two additions in January they’ll still be fighting for a top six spot
“They’re going through a spell now that they didn’t foresee, but they’ve picked up again.
“What’s happened is indicative of what happens in the Championship.
“We’ll see what happens with Leeds because Christensen is a new manager.
“He’s getting used to how competitive the league is.
“I’m sure with maybe one or two additions in January they’ll still be fighting for a top six spot.”
Wolves have a four-point lead on second-placed Cardiff but former Charlton and Huddersfield boss Powell has been most impressed by Sheffield United, who currently sit third.
Thomas Christiansen's side are currently eighth in the Championship table
“It’s shaping up to be quite a season,” he told the Daily Star. “Obviously Wolves are the early favourites and their players - who I thought might have struggled - have really settled.
“But the team that’s really stood out for me is Sheffield United.
“They’ve got momentum from last season [winning League One] and have definitely taken to the Championship with considerable ease.
“What’s great about them is they’re just going to go for it. It’s a really refreshing attitude for a newly promoted side.
“It’d be interesting to see if they can sustain it. We’ve seen it before. Southampton did it when they went League One, Championship to Premier League.”
