WOLVES made a statement of intent when they signed Portuguese winger Diogo Jota from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.
Wolves signed Diogo Jota from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder was one of a number of players lured to Molineux in the summer transfer window thanks to Wolves owners Fosun International’s connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes.
Despite playing for Porto in the Champions League last term, there were doubts about whether Jota would adapt to the demands of Championship football but he has hit the ground running.
Express Sport take a look at the stats behind Jota’s incredible start to life at Wolves.
Appearances: 12
Goals: 7
Shot Accuracy: 43 per cent
Assists: 1
Total Chances Created: 16
Pass Accuracy: 80 per cent
Dribbling Success Rate: 72 per cent
Diogo Jota has been in fine form for Wolves
Jota is currently the joint-top scorer in the division, level on seven goals with Bristol City’s Bobby Reid, Sheffield Wednesday’s Gary Hooper and Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen.
He has bagged a goal every two-and-a-half hours, chipping in with a third of the team’s total.
Jota is hitting the target with nearly every other shot and is also creating more than one opportunity per game.
His passing accuracy is broadly in line with his team-mates and Jota’s also responsible for 28 per cent of Wolves’ successful dribbles.
With stats like that it’s no surprise that the club are desperate to keep him on a permanent deal.
It has been reported that Wolves are hoping to agree a £14million fee with Atletico.
Following Jota’s starring role in the win against Aston Villa, central defender Danny Batth said: “He is difficult to play against but having a player like that at Molineux is great for us and for the supporters to come and watch that is brilliant.
“He is a good lad, he is conservative. He keeps working hard and you can see from on the pitch he is very resilient. He has every chance of doing really well here.”
When asked whether Jota could play in the Premier League, Batth added: “Hopefully he gets a chance to do it himself and hopefully it is with us.”
Wycombe Wanderers gaffer Gareth Ainsworth believes Wolves will struggle to keep Jota.
Speaking on EFL Matters, he said: “It’s going to be tough, he’s on form.
“As we’ve seen with strikers in the Championship, they don’t last long.”
