Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp getting flak because of Virgil van Dijk saga - Alan Smith
LIVERPOOL fans are probably starting to question Jurgen Klopp more now, because they failed to sign Virgil van Dijk in the summer.
Those are the thoughts of Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith.
Southampton defender Van Dijk was heavily linked with a move to Anfield during the last window and he was Klopp’s top target.
The Reds were forced to apologise to the south Coast outfit after they were accused of allegedly ‘tapping up’ the Dutchman.
Van Dijk tried to force through a move, but he ended up staying at St Mary’s, with Southampton insisting he wasn't for sale.
Klopp’s only defensive acquisition over the summer was Andy Robertson, who joined for £8million from Hull.
Virgil van Dijk was the subject of intense interest from Liverpool
We know how it finished. They are thinking ‘why can’t we get sign another defender if we can’t get him
Liverpool have been leaky at the back this term, and they have already conceded 12 goals in the Premier League.
Klopp has come under scrutiny over his side’s defensive mistakes.
And Smith thinks the Van Dijk saga has caused fans to vent their fury towards Klopp.
“One or two Liverpool fans for the first time are asking questions about Klopp,” Smith told Sky Sports’ The Debate Show.

“I think it is because of the whole Van Dijk saga.
“We know how it finished. They are thinking ‘why can’t we get sign another defender if we can’t get him?’.
“So there are questions to answer for Klopp.”
