Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had agreed to play for Shearer’s side at the fundraising occasion in west London.
The match is being staged to raise money and awareness for those affected from the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Newcastle legend Shearer delivered a team talk to his players ahead of kick off and left Mourinho laughing with his comic timing.
“Thank you very much for coming, giving your time up today,” he started.
“It’s a fantastic cause. I know you’ve all travelled from all parts of the country to be here.

“I’ve got to apologise. Sir Alex isn’t here but I’ve got the second greatest instead.”

The club have not won the title since Ferguson retired in 2013.
