Manchester City Transfer Exclusive: Pep Guardiola told to forget signing forwards
PEP GUARDIOLA must sort out Manchester City's defence or risk another trophyless season, says Danny Mills.
Pep Guardiola has been urged to sign defenders at Manchester City
Manchester City have not won any silverware in Guardiola's first year at the club.
The Spaniard has never gone a club campaign without winning a trophy since becoming Barcelona manager in 2008.
But the best City can hope for ahead of Sunday's last game of the season is a third-place finish in the Premier League.
City face a tricky summer ahead, with Pablo Zabaleta leaving the club and Vincent Kompany's future in doubt following a spate of injuries.
And Mills says Guardiola needs to address the City defence, which has sipped more goals this term than champions Chelsea and title rivals Tottenham.
Manchester City have brilliant options going forward but he has to make sure that defence is sound
"Obviously there are a lot of players out of contract at the club," Mills told Express Sport.
"Realistically they need two good full-backs to come in. Kompany is brilliant when he’s fit but obviously they need someone alongside him, whether that’s John Stones or Nicolas Otamendi.
"The goalkeeper is clearly an issue, with Willy Caballero out of contract. Claudio Bravo doesn’t look up to the Premier League when he’s under pressure."
Express Sport understands City are interested in signing Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker, which could lead to Bacary Sagna's departure.
Guardiola is also keen to bring Alexis Sanchez to the club.

But Mills says the attack does not need tampering with.
"Does Yaya Toure stay or does he go? He’s 34 years old after all," Mills added.
"Attacking-wise, it’s fine. They’ve got Segio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.
"They have brilliant options going forward but he has to make sure that defence is sound.
"When you look at that defence Pep had at Barcelona: Carles Puyol, Dani Alves, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano - a holding midfielder who can play centre-half. Great defenders.
"It was the same at Bayern Munich. World-class defenders. He doesn’t have that at City at the moment."
