Jones failed to travel with the England squad yesterday to prepare for tonight's (7.45pm) friendly with Germany in Dortmund.
Phil Jones has been in impressive form for Man United this season
He was subsequently sent back to Manchester to undergo scans to find out the extent of his injury.
But he looks certain to miss England's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania as well as a crucial period for United.
England boss Gareth Southgate said: “It happened in training. He took a knock to his foot.
Phil Jones' injury will come as a blow to Man United boss Jose Mourinho
“He’ll have it looked at and hopefully it will not be too serious.”
Jose Mourinho's side face a run of nine games in April alone that includes a two-legged Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht and crunch Premier League clashes with Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City.
But Jones will be forced to watch from the sidelines as he looks set to miss out on securing his first international cap for England since 2015 as well as another portion of the season with United through injury.
