The England captain’s future has been thrown into doubt in recent days after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho this season.
Wayne Rooney was thought to be considering a mega-money move to the Chinese Super League with his agent reportedly in China to negotiate a transfer.
The 31-year-old has since quashed the rumours by insisting he will stay at Manchester United.
But Merson would prefer Rooney to one day return to his boyhood club instead of opting to ply his trade in the Far East.
Wayne Rooney has been linked with a move to China

“I think he’s too good for China. For me, I’d love him to finish his career at Everton if I’m being honest,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He started there, he’s an Everton fan and I would love that but that’s just me. He’s just a bit too good for China.
“To be fair, Wayne Rooney has done everything in the game so if he did go, I wouldn’t have any qualms because he’s beaten records and he’s got caps but when I see other youngsters going there, I just think ‘what are you doing?

“You’re playing in the best league in the world, you’re getting good money, so why go over there?’”
Rooney made 67 league appearance for the Toffees before sealing his move to Old Trafford in 2004.
Last month the 31-year-old became United’s all-time leading goalscorer as he surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 goals.
