Giroud, 30, has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal with Arsene Wenger opting to start Alexis Sanchez ahead of the Frenchman.
Arsenal have been knocked out by Bayern Munich at the last 16 stage of the Champions League on two separate occasions and have failed to progress past this point in the last six seasons.
Ferdinand reckons Olivier Giroud should continue as an impact sub for Arsenal
And Ferdinand reckons it is better for Giroud to maintain his place on the bench for the clash at the Allianz Arena tonight and Wenger should opt for the pace of Sanchez in a bid to exploit Bayern's weak point in defence.
Asked if Giroud should start, Ferdinand told BT Sport: "It depends what Arsene wants to do.

"If he wants a target to hit over retaining possession then he's the guy to do that, and he's a threat in the box.
"I wouldn't (play him). I would use him as they have this season, as a sub coming off the bench and impacting the game.
"I'd play Sanchez up front because of his pace. This Bayern Munich defence, when it comes to pace, is one of their weaknesses."
