The cash-strapped strugglers are eyeing Robbie Keane and Joleon Lescott - combined ages are 70 - in a bid to boost their flagging fortunes.
Keane, 36, is a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy and is expected to open talks with Sunderland next week. But they face competition from Brighton, Leeds and Preston.

Lescott, 34, who has been training with the Wearsiders after leaving AEK Athens, could also be offered a short term deal.
Manager David Moyes, severely restricted by Sunderland's debts of around £140million, was also hoping to tempt Everton's Phil Jagielka to bolster his defence.

Preliminary talks are understood to have been held yesterday when Everton won 1-0 against Palace at Selhurst Park.
