Express Sport understands Manchester United have agreed terms with Lindelof over proposed January transfer.
Bosses have been working hard on the deal to secure the Sweden international centre-back in time for New Year’s Day.
United value Lindelof at £38m, which is £8m above his current release clause that will become active in the summer.
But Benfica have moved to significantly increase that clause.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Lindelof will sign a new contract with Benfica that will raise his release clause to £51.2m (€60m).
It is claimed that United would only pay the full transfer fee if Lindelof achieves a number of performance-related clauses, meaning the up-front fee may be closer to United’s initial valuation.

Lindelof, 22, is set to sign a £58,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford, having only properly broken into the Benfica first team last season.
His former club Vasteras will receive a 20 per cent share in the final transfer fee.
