Beat Bayern Munich to top spot in Group D as a well-drilled defence conceded only twice in six games. Lost a second Champions League final in three seasons in May when city rivals Real once more got the better of them - this time on a penalty shoot-out.
Can play: Benfica, Leverkusen, Manchester City, Paris, Porto
BARCELONA

Manager: Luis Enrique
Key player: Lionel Messi
Odds: 3/1 (favourites)
Comfortably won Group C and piled up the goals with 20 in six games, including a 7-0 Nou Camp rout of Celtic. Barca's strikeforce of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar will take some stopping but a 3-1 group defeat at Manchester City hinted at defensive vulnerability.
Can play: Bayern, Benfica, Leverkusen, Paris, Porto
Lionel Messi's Barcelona beat Man City to top spot in their group
BAYER LEVERKUSEN
Best previous performance: Runners-up (2002)
Manager: Roger Schmidt
Key player: Lars Bender
Odds: 100/1
Edged out Tottenham to finish runners-up in Group E behind Monaco, who they beat 3-0 in their final game. Remained unbeaten in qualifying - drawing four of their six games - and a 1-0 Wembley win over Spurs was the passport to their place in the last 16.

BAYERN MUNICH
Best previous performance: Winners (1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013)

Lost out on top spot in Group D to Atletico Madrid after slipping to a surprise 3-2 defeat to Rostov in Russia. Also lost 1-0 away to Atletico, but beat the Spaniards at home by the same margin and scored nine goals in thrashing PSV Eindhoven (4-1) and Rostov (5-0).
Can play: Arsenal, Barcelona, Juventus, Leicester, Monaco, Napoli
BENFICA
Best previous performance: Winners (1961, 1962)
Manager: Rui Vitoria
Key player: Eduardo Salvio
Odds: 100/1
Squeezed through as Group B runners-up, in part due to Besiktas' extraordinary 6-0 defeat to also-rans Dynamo Kiev in the final round of games. The Portuguese giants can boast impressive European pedigree, but the defence needs work and they are not the force of years gone by.
Can play: Arsenal, Atlético, Barcelona, Dortmund, Juventus, Leicester, Monaco
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Best previous performance: Winners (1997)
Manager: Thomas Tuchel
Key player: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Odds: 14/1
Kept the best for last to top Group F at Real Madrid's expense. The Germans looked like finishing runners-up when they trailed 2-0 at the Bernabeu, but Aubameyang and Marco Reus - two minutes from time - scored to preserve Dortmund's unbeaten record.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 5 things you need to know
JUVENTUS
Best previous performance: Winners (1985, 1996)
Manager: Massimiliano Allegri
Key player: Gonzalo Higuain
Odds: 14/1
A 3-1 win at Sevilla was key to them topping Group H. Dropped points at home to Sevilla and Lyon, but won all three of their away games. Conceding twice in six games - a record only matched by Atletico Madrid and FC Copenhagen - underlined their status as serious contenders.
Can play: Benfica, Bayern, Leverkusen, Manchester City, Paris, Porto, Real Madrid
LEICESTER
Best previous performance: Competition debutants
Manager: Claudio Ranieri
Key player: Riyad Mahrez
Odds: 40/1
The Premier League champions are making their debut among the European elite this season. But the Foxes made short work of Group G, enjoying the best start of any newcomers by winning their opening four games before an under-strength side were hammered 5-0 in Porto.
Can play: Bayern, Benfica, Leverkusen, Paris, Real Madrid, Sevilla
MANCHESTER CITY
Best previous performance: Semi-final (2016)
Manager: Pep Guardiola
Key player: Sergio Aguero
Odds: 12/1
Secured their last 16 place before being held 1-1 at home by Celtic in their final group fixture. Despite beating Barcelona 3-1 at home, City always looked like settling for second spot in Group C after being soundly beaten at the Nou Camp and drawing 3-3 in Glasgow. Defensive issues remain a big concern.
Can play: Atletico, Dortmund, Juventus, Monaco, Napoli
Pep Guardiola's side will meet a group winner in the second round
MONACO
Best previous performance: Runners-up (2004)
Manager: Leonardo Jardim
Key player: Fabinho

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Best previous performance: Semi-final (1995)
Manager: Unai Emery
Key player: Edinson Cavani
Odds: 20/1
How PSG will hope that their final day slip will not come back to haunt them in the last 16 draw. The French champions looked to have Group A under control after drawing twice with Arsenal and leading them on head-to-head, but a shock 2-2 draw against Ludogorets saw them finish second.
Can play: Atlético, Barcelona, Dortmund, Juventus, Leicester, Napoli
PORTO
Best previous performance: Winners (1987, 2004)
Manager: Nuno Espirito Santo
Key player: Andre Silva
Odds: 80/1
Porto overcame a sticky start in Group G to finish second behind Leicester. Having been held at home by Copenhagen and then losing to Leicester, Porto took 10 points from their final four games and only conceded once. Could be dangerous outsiders in the draw.

Manager: Zinedine Zidane
Key player: Cristiano Ronaldo
Odds: 11/2
Late pain saw Borussia Dortmund take top spot in Group F but no one will want to play the 11-time European champions when the knock-out stage gets under way. Gareth Bale will be missing through injury in the new year, but LaLiga's leaders are now a club record 35 games unbeaten.
Can play: Arsenal, Juventus, Leicester, Monaco, Napoli
SEVILLA
Best previous performance: Quarter-final (1958)
Manager: Jorge Sampaoli
Key player: Steven N'Zonzi
Odds: 40/1
The three-time Europa League winners (2014, 2015 and 2016) are finally creating waves in the Champions League. A 3-1 home defeat to Juventus cost them first place in Group H, but they saw off Lyon for second and their European experience makes them difficult opponents.
Can play: Arsenal, Dortmund, Leicester, Monaco, Napoli
