Manchester United fan blasts £89m signing Paul Pogba
The 32-year-old has been ostracised from United's first-team squad by Jose Mourinho and is training with club's youth players.
In August the former Germany international said he would not play for another club in Europe, opening the door to a potential move to America, Asia or the Middle East.
And speaking to German magazine Kicker, Garber admitted he's watching Schweinsteiger's situation closely.
He said: "We would welcome Bastian with open arms. He would be a leader for our many young players.
"Of course, we follow closely what happens with Bastian. He an old friend in the United States.
"Against the US team he played in the 2014 World Cup, and he also played with Bayern Munich in an All Star game in 2014."
Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger
"I believe that Manchester United could 100 percent benefit from a fit Bastian Schweinsteiger," he told German newspaper Sport Bild.
"If everything you hear and read is true, you can consider it disrespectful.
"He’s not just some player, and also not only 18 or 19."
