Chelsea dealt transfer blow with West Brom set to complete defender signing
CHELSEA have lost out to West Brom in the race to sign free agent Martin Caceres, according to reports.
Chelsea's Most Expensive Transfers
Caceres has been without a club since leaving Juventus in July, with Blues boss Antonio Conte said to be interested in a swoop.
Chelsea signed David Luiz and Marcos Alonso on transfer deadline day but their problems at the back have continued - shipping nine goals from their first seven Premier League games.
But, according to Italian website Calciomercato, Conte is set to miss out on Caceres to Tony Pulis’ West Brom.
The 29-year-old is reportedly closing in on a move to the Hawthorns in order to provide competition for first-choice duo Jonny Evans and Gareth McAuley.
Express Sport understands Pulis is clinging to his job and, if the reports are to be believed, then Caceres might be a parting gift.

The defender would bring experience to the Baggies backline after enjoying spells at some of Europe’s top clubs throughout a successful career.
He was part of the Barcelona side that won the treble under Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola back in 2009.
And the Uruguay international also won five titles with Juventus, two of which were won when Conte was in charge, between the years 2012 and 2016.
