As revealed by Expess Sport, Guardiola has made an early statement at Man City by leaving out the England goalkeeper.
Instead Willy Caballero starts in goal behind debut John Stones. Spanish winger Nolito also makes his first start in a very attacking line-up.
One notable omission from the squad is Yaya Toure, with the Ivorian also dropped.
For Sunderland, David Moyes hands a debut to Donald Love while 20-year-old midfielder Lynden Gooch also starts.
Summer signings Papy Djilobodji, Paddy McNair and Adnan Januzaj are on the bench.
