Sheffield Wednesday boss Carvalhal makes surprise contract admission ahead of Hull final
CARLOS CARVALHAL has signed a three-year contract as manager of Sheffield Wednesday - even though he would have been happy with a 12-month deal.
Carlos Carvalhal guided Sheffield Wednesday to sixth place in the Championship this term
Wednesday rewarded Carvalhal with a contract extension last month after he guided the Owls towards the Championship play-offs.
They did not publicise the length of the deal at the time but Carvalhal was happy to put the record straight on the eve of the play-off final against Hull at Wembley on Saturday, when victory will take Wednesday back into the Premier League for the first time since 2000.
Carvalhal said: "I signed for another three years here. I didn't want to sign for that long - I wanted one year - but the chairman wanted three.
"I want to stay at clubs when people are happy with me - the fans, the chairman, the players - and when I'm happy also. So I don't have any problems to move if the people aren't happy."
The 31-year-old's form during that memorable run led to Tigers boss Steve Bruce talking up his England chances - a claim shot down by his former Manchester United team-mate Roy Keane as being said "after having had a beer".
It was a typically acid-tongued Keane put-down that hurt former Under-21 international Davies, who would love to show the outspoken Irishman he has still got what it takes to hack it in the Premier League.
The former Aston Villa defender said: "I didn't like Roy Keane claiming the gaffer had been on the beer when he talked about me and England. It was unnecessary and disrespectful in terms of the form I was showing at the time.
"If he'd said it when I was in the Championship and not playing well then fair enough, but we were going into a cup final against a top team.
"I took the comments with a pinch of salt because not everyone is going to be your biggest fan so it'd be nice to get back into the Premier League to test ourselves against the best."
