Discussions which began after the club's relegation from the Premier League on May 11 are believed to have proved fruitful.
According to the Newcastle Chronicle, hopes are high around St James' Park that an agreement of a three-year deal with the 56-year-old has been reached.
The Magpies are also expected to announce the sacking of scout Graham Carr, which is thought to have been one of Benitez's conditions.
Benitez, based in Liverpool, reportedly arrived on Tyneside to conclude negotiations with Newcastle's managing director Lee Charnley.

Almost 28,000 Newcastle fans signed a petition for Benitez to stay, and their efforts appear to have swayed the experienced manager's decision.
And Benitez is reportedly ready to get to work on summer plans ahead of next season's Championship campaign once Newcastle have officially announced his extension.
