Sunderland star: This is how we beat Everton to ensure Premier League survival
JERMAIN DEFOE paid tribute to Sunderland's fans after they beat Everton 3-0 to avoid Premier League relegation with a game to spare.
Defoe has scored 15 times in the Premier League this season to help Sunderland stay up
And inside a bouncing Stadium of Light, Defoe was quick to admit that home advantage was key on their most important night of the season.
"The fans won us the game," Defoe said.
"If you look at the great teams over the years it's all about team spirit and togetherness.
"The last two weeks now we've had good performances but the main thing is the team spirit and that's fantastic.
"We were a bit nervous. Everton are a good team and they move the ball well.
"They make the pitch big.
"But we just had to stay relaxed and not get caught up in the occasion.
"Before the game we were confident and it was just the case of getting the first goal to settle us down."
