Thibaut Courtois admits he prefers playing for Belgium
The Blues keeper is with the national team ahead of their friendly with Portugal.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are 10th in the league after a disastrous start to the season which saw Jose Mourinho sacked in December.
And the 23-year-old thinks the writing was on the wall for the Blues' season before a ball had even been kicked.
Courtois told RTBF: "I think that our pre-season was very short. Maybe physically we weren't in good shape.
"In the first match [of the season] we lost the Community Shield [to Arsenal]. Then without doubt we needed a change at that moment.
"It is not only the fault of the [Chelsea] defence, although I prefer to play with the defence of the Red Devils."
