Martin Keown: This is why Arsenal failed against Manchester United
MARTIN KEOWN has blasted Arsenal’s defending following their surprise 3-2 defeat at Manchester United yesterday.
Martin Keown says Arsenal's players weren't interested in defending
18-year-old striker Marcus Rashford stunned the Gunners with two goals at Old Trafford on his Premier League debut.
The defeat was a major blow for Arsenal in their quest to end a 12-year wait for the Premier League title.
Keown enjoyed 11 trophy-laden years with the Gunners between 1993 and 2004, winning three Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger, and he slammed Arsenal’s failure ‘to defend as a team’ against Louis van Gaal’s youngsters.
Mesut Ozil’s late consolation goal mattered little as the Gunners extended their winless run to three matches, after drawing with Hull in the FA Cup and then losing 2-0 at home to Barcelona in the first-leg of their last 16 tie in the Champions League.
Keown added: “For the third, both Arsenal full backs were well advanced so when the ball was lost there was an obvious danger.
“Aaron Ramsey is great at sniffing out attacking opportunities but he did not sense the defensive threat and the United midfield could gallop forward with Ander Herrera in acres of space. It was far too easy.”
