Liverpool legend reveals why he feels 'sorry' for Christian Benteke
MARK LAWRENSON believes Christian Benteke is not the natural goalscorer Liverpool need to save their season.
Mark Lawrenson has questioned Christian Benteke's movement and finishing
The 25-year-old Belgian striker signed for £32.5million in the summer but he's failed to live up to that price tag, scoring just seven goals in 28 matches this season.
Liverpool travel to Benteke's last club, Aston Villa, today in the Premier League after losing 2-1 in the last minute of extra time at West Ham in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
Lawrenson, who played more than 300 games for Liverpool in the 1980s, praised Benteke's overall performance at Upton Park but highlighted the Belgian's poor finishing as a problem.
"He did brilliantly to help create the opportunity, but when he was sent clear the ball was right under his feet – he wasn't allowing it to breathe.
"It meant he could never get in the position where he could make Randolph commit himself – he wasn't able to bend the ball or dink it over him.
"Benteke is simply leaden-footed, and there's not much he can do about that because of his stature. He's a big guy."
