The Red Devils suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday with Louis van Gaal's injury-stricken side struggling once again for plenty of goals.
The Dutchman has been criticised for his defensive style of play in recent months and Ferdinand believes it's now having an effect on the squad.
“Players are playing it safe because they are afraid of the consequences if they try to take chances," Ferdinand told The Sun.
“Manchester United are going backwards again and I don’t see that changing because the manager will not change.
