Twitter erupts for Man Utd 'legend' Wayne Rooney as fellow pros lead tributes to striker
MANCHESTER UNITED striker Wayne Rooney was hailed as a "legend" by his fellow professionals after a behind-the-scenes documentary was aired by the BBC.
Wayne Rooney - Spotlight On
"Wayne Rooney: behind the goals" went on last night and outlined his rise from a young prospect in Liverpool to his country's highest ever goalscorer.
Viewers also got a rare glimpse into Rooney's personal life, with the star confessing his love of poetry and revealing he proposed to wife Coleen in a petrol station.
The undoubted highlight was his goals, though, from his first ever strike for Everton against Arsenal to the sensational overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011.
The documentary was made after Wayne Rooney became England's record goalscorer
Rooney's overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011 was a particular highlight
Rooney said he found it difficult to leave Everton for Manchester United
It all culminated with the build up to his record-breaking goal for England, which he scored from the penalty spot against Switzerland at Wembley last month.
In candid scenes, the 29-year-old could be seen spending quality time with his family and he openly discussed well-documented off-pitch problems that have blighted his career.
Despite that, his fellow professionals were quick to pay tribute to the man described as a "legend" and an "inspiration" to some of the Premier League's younger players.
Here's how they reacted:
