The England skipper smashed home a penalty for his 50th international goal to eclipse Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing record.
And he continued to lead by example as he addressed his team-mates immediately after the 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley.
Rooney, named captain last summer, appears to be adapting well to his new-found responsibilities.
Not only has he spearheaded a flawless Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, he had some advice for the younger players around him.

Already, the 29-year-old has been vocal about what the players need to do as they prepare for the tournament in France this summer.
And he looked every bit the country's leader as he commanded the dressing room with some words of wisdom for his younger counterparts.
"Thank you to everybody, coaches, players, staff I've worked with such a long time," he said in a video released by the FA.

"This is such a huge moment with myself, my family and my career, so hopefully for the team, for myself, a lot more to come.
"We can be successful and hopefully there's a lot of the young lads, Harry (Kane) coming through, Ross (Barkley), Raheem (Sterling) coming through, can come close and even pass me in the future, so I'm grateful.
"It means the world to me. Thank you very much."
