Aston Villa's Ashley Westwood deserves England call-up, claims Tim Sherwood
TIM SHERWOOD believes Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood could be the long-term successor of Manchester United's Michael Carrick for England.
Tim Sherwood tips Ashley Westwood to earn England call-up
The 25-year-old, who made 34 appearances in all competitions last term, put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Villa Park last week.
And Sherwood admits Westwood will have a good chance of playing in Roy Hodgson's England side before the end of the season if he keeps up his good form.
"I will be very surprised if Ashley doesn't play for England this season," Sherwood said. "He's as good as that.
"I think he has got every chance. If he keeps on with his consistency - and the level of his performances - I am sure it won't be too far around the corner."
The Villa boss went on to compare Westwood to Red Devils veteran Carrick, and believes he could replace the 34-year-old in the Three Lions set-up when he retires from international football.
"He's very much in the Michael Carrick-mould," Sherwood added. " Michael is not getting any younger. I am not sure they have found a replacement for him yet."
