Centre-half Hummels was expected to leave the Bundesliga club this summer after Jurgen Klopp quit his post as head coach.
Manchester United were tipped to land the 26-year-old and even reportedly tried to sign him last winter.
Arsenal were also said to be in the running to complete the transfer, which would have seen the Germany international link up with compatriot Per Mertesacker in the heart of the Gunners defence.
But the player told Kicker that he changed his mind over a switch after speaking to Tuchel.
"We had a talk during the time when I was still considering my future," Hummels said.
"I liked what he said to me and the way in which he said it.
Mats Hummels says he was convinced to remain at Borussia Dortmund
"He told me about all my mistakes. If a coach wants me to stay, then I think it's good that he doesn't just butter things up, but actually tells the truth."
Neither United nor Arsenal have signed a centre-half this summer, although the Red Devils are expected to bid for Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia before the transfer window shuts.
