STEPH HOUGHTON insists England should hold their heads high despite their heartbreaking World Cup semi-final exit.

A last-minute own goal from Laura Bassett saw the Three Lionesses crash to a 2-1 defeat to Japan.
Mark Sampson's side broke new ground by making the semi-finals and skipper Houghton claims she is very proud of England's efforts.
"There's no words to describe it. I'm so proud of the girls and the staff," Houghton told BBC Sport.

"The squad showed great character and great passion. They are a bunch of girls who gave everything.
"We now need to try and finish third. We have given a good account of ourselves at the World Cup."
