The club have failed to conclude contract negotiations with centre-half Ramos, with reports claiming he has requested a transfer.
Manchester United have had two bids already rejected by Real, who value their man at around £64million.
But with Manchester City also joining their rivals in the pursuit of Ramos, Real have begun preliminary discussions over a replacement defender.
And they appear to have settled on Valencia's 23-year-old Shkodran Mustafi, who boasts eight Germany international caps.
Germany's Shkodran Mustafi has been contracted by Real Madrid over a summer transfer
The former Everton youth product joined Valencia from Sampdoria last summer and his father said Real have been in touch over a transfer to the Bernabeu.
Kujtim Mustafi told Sport1: “It is true, there was contact by telephone about this matter.
“Madrid are a great club with a lot of success. And of course I would be lying if I said that I would not be proud if my son signed for this club.”
