Man Utd fans told to expect a difficult Champions League campaign by Owen Hargreaves
OWEN HARGREAVES is expecting his former club Manchester United to endure a difficult Champions League campaign next season.
Owen Hargreaves believes Manchester United will struggle in Champions League next season
Louis van Gaal led United to a top-four finish this term to make a return to Europe's elite competition, having failed to qualify last year under David Moyes.
The Dutch tactician is expected to make significant investment in the summer in order to build a squad worthy of winning titles, with reports suggesting he'll have £150million to spend.
However, Hargreaves, who won the Champions League twice during his playing career, believes United aren't ready to compete with the European heavyweights.
I don't think Manchester United are ready to compete for a Champions League title
"I don't think Manchester United are ready to compete for a Champions League title," Hargreaves said.
"If you look at Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona - realistically I don't think they are.
"I'm sure the fans would love to get back to those days when they were in the Champions League semi-finals virtually every year and not only winning the league, but winning it beautifully as well."
